Meet Google Cloud - Set up Remote Desktop for Linux VM

Excited to share an interesting discovery I made while meeting with Google Cloud! It's a perfect solution for those who do small research or need secure, anytime access to their own VM. Today, I'll guide you through setting up Chrome Remote Desktop for Linux on Compute Engine. While other images are compatible, a Debian Linux virtual machine works particularly well for this task.

First things first: Create an account on Google Cloud Platform. Don't forget, they offer new customers a generous $300 in free credits for up to 90 days after signup. This makes it a great opportunity to experiment and explore!

After you create your account and can log into Google Platform you must activate your bill.

Then find Account Management on the left panel and try to activate your bill.

In my case, it was impossible to immediately start work because according to the company policy, you must approve your identity before starting to work with the Google Cloud Platform. In general, it takes up to 2 days but could be more, and be ready to send them your ID or international passport. Diia (for Ukrainian) is also eligible but only the English version.
Ok. After you are sure that your bill is active you can start to build your VM instance for this purpose go to the Navigation menu > Compute Engine > VM Instances and click CREATE INSTANCE.

Of course, if you want, and can choose the best options for your instances but for our mission, it will be enough to indicate only the name and click create I don't know how to name your instance you can clacl create.

Also, Google Cloud provides the possibility to manage your instances with the help of Terminal. That's why if you want you can click Activate Cloud Shell in your right corner:
You can copy the command to create a VM from My GitHub Repository.

Those who want more or just to change their monthly estimates which are indicated in the right top corner could play with such settings as Region, Machine Type, Storage, etc. Also for the best solution, you always can start to read the Official Google Documentation.
In our case, we named our instances crdhost wait up to the minute and our instance is ready. You should see a green light near the name of your instance.

Now click SSH and connect to your new instance.

You are connected to your new instance and should see such window:

Now go to My GitHub Repository and copy, past & execute commands to implement the following tasks:
  1. Install Chrome Remote Desktop on the VM instance;
  2. Install an X Windows System desktop environment;
After going to Chrome Remote Desktop using Google Chrome Browser on your local computer and on the Set up another computer page, click Begin, then click Authorize.

Then you should
finish the setup.

Run the command on your VM using SSH and set the password

Now come back to
Chrome Remote Desktop, navigate to Remote access (left panel), and click the name of your VM instance.

Congratulations!!!!
